Bodily injury vs property damage

Two separate auto-insurance claim tracks: one for injuries, one for vehicle damage.

Every auto policy has two main liability coverages: bodily injury (BI) for injuries to other people, and property damage (PD) for damage to other people's vehicles or property. They have separate limits, separate adjusters, and resolve on separate timelines.

After a crash, the property damage claim is usually quick. Total loss valuation, repair estimates, rental car coverage. It resolves in days or weeks. The bodily injury claim takes much longer because it depends on the full medical picture, which can take months or years to develop.

Don't conflate them. Settling the property damage claim does not affect the bodily injury claim. Releases for one should not extinguish the other, but read every release carefully before signing.
